• Is bleaching unsafe?
In the long run, no side effects related to the whitening of teeth have been acknowledged. In the short run, it is possible that a light demineralization occurs (the dilution of the building materials of the enamel). This is comparable to drinking a can of coke which after 24 hours is buffered by saliva. This process is called remineralisation (minerals from saliva attach themselves again to the enamel). The enamel then recovers after about 24 hours.
• How and how long can I preserve the achieved results?
In general the result of the treatment lasts for approximately 2 to 4 years, depending on your personal way of living
After our Light bleaching treatment we provide you with an instruction folder, in which we describe the do’s and don’ts for the upcoming 24 hours:
-No coffee
-No tea
-No smoking
-No eating or drinking of discoloring products. These are products which can cause stains whenever you spill food or liquids on a white table cloth.
With our Intensive bleaching treatment the above is not required. After the after-care treatment you are immediately able to eat, drink and even smoke.
• What is carbamide peroxide and is it harmful for my teeth or body?
Carbamide peroxide is an oxidant. Carbamide peroxide divides into H2O and O2 (water and oxygen). It attaches to the pigment (discoloring) and penetrates the teeth. The use of a plasma lamp speeds up the oxidation process. Subsequently the carbamide peroxide, which is attached to the pigment, divides into water and oxygen and is transported via the teeth and finally via the body. As you know, water and oxygen are the body’s own substances and are harmless.
The use of hydrogen carbamide peroxide is safe. It has been independently acknowledged by the Scientific Committee for Cosmetic and Non-Food Products (SCCNFP), US Food & Drug Administration (FDA), worldwide professional organisations and key opinion leaders for the dental profession. All these parties have concluded that the use of carbamide peroxide for whitening teeth is safe and effective.
• Can carbamide peroxide cause holes in an early stage?
Nothing has proved carbamide peroxide to cause any damage. Your teeth are not being etched like what happens with some toothpaste. Carbamide peroxide is also not an acid and is not affecting the structure of the enamel.
• Do you use a bleaching gel that contains carbamide peroxide?
Yes, but in a percentage that the very strict FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in the United States allows.
• Can everybody bleach their teeth?
In case you have a lot of crowns, bridges or for instance white fillings (especially in the area of your front teeth) we advise you to ask for our opinion beforehand.
• Is it justified that my dentist is against bleaching treatments?
For over 100 years dentists have been using carbamide peroxide for whitening teeth. To be precise: in 1886 the first carbamide peroxide treatments took place. The plasma lamp has been used for over 10 years, without any side effects, in the United States and is in accordance with the very strict safety requirements. We therefore think that it is not correct that your dentist is against a whitening treatment.
• Is it possible that bleaching my teeth can be experienced as sensitive?
Sometimes you may experience a slight tingling during or after the treatment. If you have sensitive teeth or as precaution to eliminate every possibility of feeling pain, we advise you to take an aspirin before the treatment takes place.
• How white can my teeth get?
We are able to bleach your teeth up to 14 shades compared to the original color of your teeth. Of course, every type of teeth is different but in any case we are able to deliver fabulous results.
• How long does the treatment take?
A treatment takes about 1.5 hours. This does not include the time to apply the bleaching gel, the polishing and cleaning of your teeth.
We decided to prolong the duration of our treatments (namely 1.5 hours effective treatment time) as compared to the others. Resulting in getting notcieably whiter teeth.
• How can I check the results?
Before we start the treatment we use a color scale to see what the current color of your teeth is. After the treatment we compare the results to the color scale. You will be astonished by the difference.
• Is it possible to bleach just a few teeth? (e.g. only the discolored ones)
It is possible to bleach just one or a few teeth. You will not pay the price of a full treatment.
• What kind of light do you use for the treatment and can it cause any harm?
The lamp we use during the treatment is a plasma lamp. This lamp radiates light containing a harmless wave length. The lamp is also known as the blue lamp dentists use to cure fillings.
• Should I inform my dentist before I do a bleaching treatment?
In principle you do not need to see your dentist before you do a bleaching treatment. We work with acknowledged professionals that are under the supervision of dentists.
• Am I being protected from carbamide peroxide and the lamp?
Your gums do not require protection by a silicon coating (“cofferdam”) that is being applied on your gums. The products that we work with are safe and comfortable in their usage. We cover your lips with a gel that protects them (vaseline). This provides enough protection from the lamp and the peroxide that we use.
• What other bleaching methods do exists?
The whitening methods can be distinguished into: at- home teeth bleaching methods or professional bleaching methods.
At- home teeth bleaching method:
Whitening teeth pastes
Drops or white stripes
At-home tray-based teeth whitening systems
Professional bleaching:
Plasma lamp
Laser whitening
Custom-made mouthpieces
Within all professional methods hydrogen carbamide peroxide solution is being used. In case of the usage of a plasma lamp or a laser based lamp, the carbamide peroxide is rapidly activated and in a short amount of time a good result can be achieved. |
